Reverse osmosis is a method of purifying water by eliminating salts and other contaminates from tap water, sea water and brackish ground water
Nanofiltration is generally aimed at removing just the divalent ions and the larger ions using pressure-driven method of separation.
Ultrafiltration (UF) employs a membrane (in the range of 0.03 µm) to separate solid matter from dissolved components in water.
Demineralisation describes the removal of nitrates and minerals from water. Ion exchange is primarily used for water demineralisation,as it can remove ions such as magnesium and calcium which cause hardness.
Ultraviolet systems emit UV light which causes fatal damage to the genetic core of microorganisms, being absorbed by the cells of the microbe and preventing cell enzymes from interpreting the DNA.
Wastewater treatment plants aim to reduce heavy metals, partially to ensure compliance with applicable regulations. A final step of disinfection which is intended to remove pathogens is sometimes included as a precaution.
Desalination (also known as de-salting) is a process where dissolved ions are removed from high-salinity input water. Using this technique, fresh water can be produced from seawater or brackish water.
